The revival of the Terni covered market marks a key milestone with the opening, from 1° October, on the first floor, of the new Coop supermarket.

The day before, Pepco and Tedi opened on the second floor, along with Acqua&Sapone.

Urban regeneration in 21 months

The redevelopment project, designed by Studio Baldi Margheriti Associati, launched in January 2025, involved less than two years of work (21 months to be precise), while the official opening is scheduled for 18 October.

The supermarket replaces the Superconti store, now part of Unicoop Etruria, the super cooperative with a turnover of around 1,4 billion euros, established on 1° July 2025 through the merger of Coop Centro Italia and Unicoop Tirreno.

But the redevelopment and restyling plan, largely funded by Unicoop Etruria itself, does not end here, because the opening of the food locomotive is, as mentioned, part of the broader regeneration project called “Lampada Urbana”.

This involves the entire former covered market and the surrounding areas of Piazza del Mercato, with the aim of transforming a pass-through area into a space experienced by local residents.

All Unicoop Etruria departments

The Coop store covers 1.000 square metres and has all departments: fruit and vegetables, bakery, delicatessen (with freshly prepared pasta), butcher’s, fishmonger’s, as well as household goods, home and personal care products, pantry goods, wine, food and items for pets.

Particular attention is given to [[ARTW_HTMLOPEN_AAAI]products and wines from the local area as well as to cured meats.

Modern consumer needs (organic, vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and lactose-free) are met by the range, and the supermarket – like all the other Coop supermarkets in the region – accepts state-issued coeliac vouchers provided through the Asl.

The store employs 32 employees and has 9 tills, of which 3 are traditional staffed tills and 6 are self-service.

The store is open from Monday to Saturday from 7.30 to 20.30, and on Sundays from 9 to 20.

Next to the sales area there is also the Listening Point for all customer needs, the Social Loan desk for transactions by member savers, and the Coop Members’ Space – a reference point for the cooperative’s membership, which in Terni numbers 26.000 people – as well as a Wi-Fi area with tables and chairs for eating meals. The home grocery delivery service will also be maintained.

Simonetta Radi: a new beginning for Unicoop Etruria

“This opening is another building block in establishing the cooperative’s presence in the local area,” emphasised Simonetta Radi, Chair of the Supervisory Board of Unicoop Etruria “and an important investment that consolidates the path begun with the establishment of Unicoop Etruria in July 2025.

“The return to the heart of Umbria’s second city,” the chairwoman continued, “represents a new beginning, as this is the first store opened by the group just over a year after its formation.

“At the same time, this supermarket represents an opportunity for the economic growth and enhancement of the local area, supporting the community and local businesses, and for social development, promoting solidarity, participation, and social and cultural activities carried out by the Coop members’ section.”
